Making the Attempt - The Ship

Episode: Lost Property
Location: USS Highlander - Bridge and Transporter Room 1
Timeline: MD06 1020hrs

Transporter Room

"Okay, this should be it," Jean said as he set up the transporter one last time. While it'd gotten faster as they had gone along, he still was carefully watching the system, and for good reason. The more people they moved over, the more likely some small atomic imbalance might build up, too slight to notice with any single transport but potentially catastrophic over the long run. Fortunately there hadn't been any sign of that, but the transporter itself was starting to throw up warnings. It was designed to work constantly over long periods to aid large-scale movements like evacuations or disaster relief, but the added strain of the subspace link was starting to wear it down. It was a good thing they were finishing p.

As Captain Chandrakala felt the almost familiar sensation of re-materialisation fade, she couldn't help but think about how it was subtly different to the feeling that her own ship's transporter usually had. The transporter pad was a lot bigger too; it looked like it could hold six times as many people as the small unit on her own ship. She looked over to the officers who had been working the beam-over process. "Permission to come aboard?"

"Permission granted Captain Chandrakala," Ryan said. "Welcome to the USS Highlander."

"I want to thank you all for getting my people over safe," she said, as she stepped down from the pad. "I don't know what we would have done if you hadn't found us. We'd probably still be unaware we were even out of phase."

"I'm just happy it worked," Ryan commented. He could already feel the tension draining from his shoulders now that everyone was aboard safe and sound. His job was done and thankfully he and Jeans creative bending of the laws of transporters had worked without causing any major problems. "We had to get creative with subspace mechanics and rewrite a small section of the everything we know about transporters as a result but I'm glad that we got you aboard."

"Well whatever you did, I thank you," the captain said. "Now, I'd like to go to the bridge. I'd like to be there when Captain Williams makes the attempt to rescue my ship."

"Is that it?" Vex asked, looking over at Ryan and Jean

"Should be," Ryan nodded. "And not a moment too soon, looks like the Chambers Coil is developing a few micro fractures."

"We've got your crew in temporary quarters sir," Vex explained to Captain Chandrakala. "And good work sirs," he said, looking at both Jean and Ryan. "You two should win some award for that. Shall we go?"

Bridge

Tim stood as Chandrakala was led onto the bridge. "Welcome to the Highlander."

"Thank you Captain," she responded, attempting to keep the look of awe from her face as she surveyed the bridge. Technology had certainly come a very long way in the last two hundred years. "I wanted to be here when you made the attempt to rescue the DeSalle."

"We were just about to start," Tim said. "Grif?"

"She's responding to commands now. We're attempting to simulate up to warp 4.5 which the ships logs say was the speed." Monitoring the sensor readouts as close as she had ever, the Trill nodded her head ever so slightly with each .5 the field went up. "Warp 3.5.... Warp 4.... Warp 4.5. Sir she's ready for detonation."

"Shields up," Tim ordered, taking his seat again. "Detonate the tricobalt device."

Mac tapped a control on his console. "Detonating in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1." The viewscreen dimmed automatically as the warhead detonated. When it was clear to see what was happening again, there was a glowing rift in space, along the edge of the DeSalle's warp field, which had become visible around the ship as a result of the interference.

"Sensors?" Tim ordered.

Ryan took his place at the science station, running through the enhanced changes they had made to find the out of phase De Salle in the first place. Energy readings spiked for a few seconds and then a subspace shockwave reverberated throughout subspace essentially destroying the other ship. Ryan watched his screens for a few more moments and then started another deep scan of the area. He looked over at Jean to make sure that they had both come up with the same readings.

"The De Salle that was out of phase seems to have been destroyed," Ryan reported. "No other anomalies have been detected so far. It appears as though it worked sir."

A few seconds after Ryan had given his report, the rift closed. "Report," Tim instructed.

"Can confirm, the NX that was out of phase with our reality has been completely destroyed. All we have left is the one sitting right there." The Engineer replied hands dancing over the touch panel at her fingers, "Our DeSalle seems to have taken minor damage, hull breach on C deck, some fused hull plating but it seems the anomaly absorbed most of the explosion."

Tim relaxed back into his chair, not realising how much tension he'd been holding onto while they made their attempt. "Well Captain," he said to Chandrakala. "I'm afraid the ship we were able to save is a little older than you remember her, but it's better than the alternative. Grif, put together an engineering team to go over to the DeSalle and resume repairs. I'd like to get her moving under her own power before we set a course for Cestus."

"Aye sir. I'll have them over as soon as we get the breach sealed." Grif said just as she sent the orders down to Engineering proper. "Shouldnt be more than an hour or two before full teams are over there."

"I'd like my people to help you with that, Captain," Chandrakala said. "We know that ship inside out, and to be honest it'll give us something to take our minds off the fact we're all now over two hundred years old."

"Of course," Tim agreed, looking back over to Grif. "As soon as they're ready to, start incorporating some of the DeSalle's crew into your work teams."

"We'll make it work."
