USS Highlander
Summary
The USS Highlander is a second generation Intrepid-class starship, constructed to conform to upgraded specifications designed following the analysis of technologies brought back and adapted aboard the USS Voyager during that ship's seven years in the Delta Quadrant. The Intrepid-class is designed for long-term autonomous exploration missions, with specific consideration given for long-term deep space assignments. The class utilises bio-neural gelpaks to augment its computing capability, and has a full scientific suite onboard to enable advanced scientific surveys.
When first commissioned, the Intrepid-class featured many innovations then becoming available, not least being the tricyclic input manifold of the warp core and variable geometry pylons. The class was also the first to incorporate bio-neural gel packs and was equipped with the Mark 1 Emergency Medical Hologram (or EMH) system.
Capabilities upon introduction were equally impressive. The class boasted the best navigational sensors, and the highest top speed of any Starfleet vessel until the development of the Prometheus-class. Its multi-mission design was backed up by a main computer processor capable of simultaneously accessing 47 million data channels and sustaining 575 trillion calculations per nanosecond in operational temperatures from 10 to 1790 Kelvin. While newer starships have improved upon the capabilities of the Intrepid class during the two decades since its design, the class has been constantly updated to make the most of new advancements in technology, ensuring that it remains one of Starfleet's premier multi-platform vessels, capable of being operated with a far smaller crew compliment than other vessels with similar capabilities.
