Making the Attempt - The People

Episode: Lost Property
Location: USS Highlander - Bridge and Transporter Room 1
Timeline: MD06 0900hrs

It was finally time to put their plans into action. Tim had been briefed yesterday on both the plans for beaming the crew of the DeSalle over to the Highlander, and on Grif's proposal to sever the bond between the two NX-class ships, and he had given them both his authorisation to proceed. He'd also discussed the possibility of the DeSalle crew bringing small personal belongings along with them, and asked Jean and Ryan to make the appropriate adjustments to the mass of the test cylinders they would be shifting out of phase in place for the crew members, in order to keep the atomic masses of the two realities constant. He'd briefed Captain Chandrakala on the plans, and made sure she was aware of the psychological consequences to her crew of what had happened to them late last night. With the two captains both on-board, the first beam-overs were scheduled for oh-nine-hundred, and Tim was a little anxious; he couldn't imagine being beamed onto a ship two hundred years into his future and what that would mean for his life, yet that was just what 80 people would be doing in a few short minutes, a few at a time.

"Williams to transporter room one," he said, opening a comm channel from his seat on the bridge. "Are you ready?"

"Everything is ready on this end," Ryan said.

Vex glanced around the transporter room. He wouldn't pretend to know what it was that Jean and Ryan had done to the transporter systems to make it work nor would he ask them to explain it. He couldn't imagine what the crew of the De Salle was going through, being transported 200 years into the future. He didn't really think that there would be trouble but better to have someone handy that could maintain order if needed.

"All transporter systems are good to go," Jean said, "and we have all the sensor data needed to safely adjust the beams."

"Okay, let's get this show on the road. Open a channel to the DeSalle," Tim said, diverting his attention to the viewscreen. "Captain," he said, once the connection had been established. "Are you ready to proceed?"

"We are, Captain," Chandrakala responded. "A few of my crew had to be reminded to pack light - I think some of them still don't quite believe what you've told them about your replicators. But they're ready."

"We'll make sure they've got everything they need to be comfortable as soon as they've beamed over," Tim answered, smiling. "Jean, Ryan; over to you."

Transporter Room

"Initiating first beam-out," Jean reported. Even though most of the sequence was now pre-programmed, he still wanted to double-check everything manually the first time out. "Link to their transporter established. Energizing. Matter stream received, holding in pattern buffer for quantum adjustments." He took a minute to carefully scrutinize the results before nodding. "And rematerializing."

The transporter pad lit up and a person shimmered into a view, a bit more slowly than normal but otherwise apparently intact.

"Doc, over to you," Jean said, resisting the urge to cross his fingers. He'd never lost someone in transport before, but there was always a first time for everything...

Vex took a deep breath and watched as a vaguely humanoid shape materialized on the transporter pad. He kept his fingers crossed, he hadn't ever seen at transporter accident, although he had read about them. He didn't really want to be around when things went horribly wrong. The beam finally finished materializing the person, collectively speaking it seemed as if everyone in the room was holding their breath.

Ensign Jason Perth took a deep breath as soon as the tingling sensation of the transporter room fell away. He opened one eye first and then the other, looking around the room to make sure that he wasn't dead. Well, he supposed even if he was dead he wouldn't really know it. He then patted himself down, making sure that all the important parts where then. A young ensign stepped forward with a grin, offering his hand.

"Welcome to the 24th century, I'm Ensign Krylore."

"Um, thanks glad not to be dead," Jason responded. He took a few steps down off the transport pad and continued looking around the room.

Ryan let out the breath that he wasn't ware that he was holding. He looked down at the display as the systems recycled and ran through the diagnostic mode to check and make sure nothing had been damaged in the transport.

"Mr. Perth, there's a security officer outside that will show you to temporary quarters and how to access our ship's replicator," Vex said, gesturing towards the door.

"Transporter room," came the captain's voice over the comm. "Was the first transport successful?"

"Our first guest seems to have arrived unharmed," Ryan reported. "The doctor is just finishing up running some scans."

Ryan looked over and nodded at Jean. "De Salle, we are ready for the next person. Ensign Perth has arrived unharmed and intact."

"Everything looks good on the equipment here, too," Jean said. "No signs of unusual stress on the system."

"Very good. Continue when ready."

"We should be able to get at least one a minute, maybe two," Jean said as he started the next cycle. "The limiting factor's going to be how fast their transporter can reset. Unless something goes wrong, this shouldn't take more than forty minutes to an hour to bring them all over."

"They let's hope something doesn't go wrong," Ryan replied. "Honestly though, the Corps of engineers is going to be pretty intrigued as to how we actually managed to pull this off."

Bridge

"That's everyone but the senior staff now, Captain," Chandrakala said over the view screen.

"Get yourselves to the transporter pad and get ready to beam over," Tim said. "Once you have, we'll start our attempt to phase-correct your two ships." Chandrakala nodded once before motioning off-screen, and the image snapped back to the Highlander's exterior cameras.

"Is the tricobalt device configured and ready?" Tim asked, looking over his shoulder to the tactical station.

"It is," Mac confirmed, double-checking the specifications on his console. "Everything matches Grif's specifications."

"Launch it on remote detonation, and position it twenty metres off the DeSalle's starboard side." Tim then directed his attention over to Grif at the engineering station. "Is your remote link with the DeSalle's computer set up?"

"As stable as a remote link to a three century old computer can be." Grif tapped at the buttons on the console before her attempting to shore up the connection.

"Get ready to bring the warp core online as soon as the DeSalle crew are onboard."

"We're ready whenever you are Captain."
