Seek Out New Life and New Beaches

Timeline: MD-50, 1830

Theo checked the time as he put away a finished sample tray. Analysing the bio-electric properties of the various sea life had been very fascinating, but there was only so long you could stare at fish guts before you started to go a little stir crazy.

"Hey, sir, I've got the eastern drift samples done," Theo said to Ryan, who was hunched over a terminal at the other end of the lab. "You mind if I take off a little early?"

Ryan glanced up from his station and gave the ensign a warm smile. "Thanks, we can work on the western ones tomorrow morning after the ops meeting. And no, go ahead, I think that I can handle the rest of it here."

"Thanks. Do you have any plans for the evening?" Theo asked.

"Not really," Ryan said, pushing back from his work station. "What about you? Some romantic evening out with Vex?"

"I don't know about romantic, but we're hitting the beach. There's a local sport, para...surfing? Sailing?" Theo shrugged. "Something like that, anyway, involving waves. You can come with us, if you want."

Ryan chewed on his lower lip. He was the one that said he preferred if he and Theo were friends, in his experience it made working together easier. But, on the same hand he didnt' really want to intrude on the time that Theo had to spend with Vex.

"Um, I don't know about that."

"Okay, be honest with me. We've been here a couple week. Have you actually seen the ocean in a non-work setting yet?"

"And what are you two fine looking intelligent young men up too?" Vex asked, as he entered the room. "Shouldn't you both be off by now? You've put in almost a 12 hour day."

Ryan gave Vex a smile and nod in greeting before answering Theo's question. "Um, maybe... once? Does looking at it from your room count?"

"Do you think you could pick him up and carry him over your shoulder?" Theo asked Vex. "Or would that be more of a two-man job?"

"No wait second... " Ryan said, glancing nervously over at Vex.

"He looks pretty solidly built," Vex said, looking Ryan up and down. "But I think that I could handle it, what do you have in mind."

"I think that as our personal security detachment, you have a responsiblity to ensure the physical and mental well-being of Lieutenant North," Theo reasoned. "And his well-being will be negatively impacted if he remains stuck in a lab all day. Therefore you have a duty to take him to the nearest beach, by any means necessary."

"I absouletly agree with you," Vex grinned. "What will it Ryan? The easy way or the hard way?"

Ryan quirked an eyebrow at Vex. "You do remember I was former MACO right? But fine, the easy way. Just don't take me to one of those nude beaches I heard the techs talking about."

"There are nude beaches?" Vex asked, rising an eyebrow. "Theo, did you know about those?"

Theo frowned. "That doesn't seem very sanitary. Or safe for a lot of activities."

"I agree with you on that one," Ryan said, shaking his head. "Hence why we are staying away from them."

"You two have no sense of adventure," Vex replied.

"Wouldn't the sand get everywhere?" Theo said. "Even more than it usually does, I mean. It's pretty course, rough, and irritating as it is."

"Then you put a blanket down," Vex insisted, with an exasperated shrug. "I've had many a fun time at a nude beach."

"Okay, okay," Ryan said, holding his hands up. "That is not an image I needed in my mind. But, I'll follow your lead, providing you don't lead me into too much of an embarrassing situation."

"He does not know me very well, does he?" Vex asked, arching an eyebrow at Theo.

"You win Theo, so exactly where are you taking me?" Ryan asked.

"Yes," Vex said, with a nod. "Where are you taking us Theo?"

"One of the botanists recommended a little cove a few kilometers down the coast," Theo said. "It's suppose to have some great cliffs and a parasailing rental shop. That sounds like it could be fun. I mean, it can't be too hard to do, right?"

"Usually bodily harm happens when someone utters those words," Ryan said, but then added with a grin. "Sure, sounds like fun."

"Then let's hurry and get the hell out of here," Vex said. "Like now, Theo."

"Lead on," Ryan replied, gesturing towards the door.

Theo opened his mouth to correct Ryan before realising he hadn't said MacDuff, and instead just shrugged and waved for the others to follow him down to the transit station.
