Is there a Doctor on board?

Orphans
Location: USS Highlander
Timeline: Mission Day 01
Standing on the transporter platform of the Intrepid Class vessel USS Highlander Devoni Jala could not believe that he was going to be this ships Chief Medical Officer.
Stepping down he walked over to the technician. "Do you know where I can find Captain Tim Williams?"
"The Captain?" Chief Carylon asked, looking up from her console at the person she had just beamed aboard. "Knowing him, he'll probably be down in main engineering." It was an informed guess; there was no need for him on the bridge, so he'd probably be somewhere near the core, complaining about whatever small changes the SCE team might have been making there over the past couple of months.
"Thank you." said Devoni. Picking up his duffel bag he exited the transporter room and made his way to the nearest turbolift.
"Main Engineering." he called out to the computer as he entered the turbolift.
Riding the lift in silence he still thought about what the Admiral had told him.
When Devoni entered main engineering, what few technicians were around were all staying studiously away from the warp core, large and glowing towards the back of the two-story room. The reason was obvious, as a man standing out with his red collar and his slightly grey hair, climbed out of the pit that surrounded the core and stood at the warp core maintenance console affixed to the railing once he had climbed to his feet.
"What the hell have they been messing with that for," he was cursing under his breath, as well as a few other choice words directed at the Starfleet Corps of Engineers team that had been doing the suitability inspection onboard for the past two months. "I spent months perfecting those damn equations..."
Devoni walked over to the older gentleman. "Captain Williams?" he asked.
"Yeah?" Tim asked absently, not moving his attention from the control console in front of him.
"Lieutenant Jg. Devoni Jala, reporting on board. I'm the new Chief Medical Officer." he wasn't sure whether to stand at attention or hold out his hand. Standing with protocol he stood at attention.
Tim turned at that, and smiled at his new medical officer. "Ah, Doctor. Welcome aboard." He stuck his hand out, almost as if to purposefully go the opposite way to the doctor's stance.
Devoni relaxed and took the offered hand. "Thank you sir. I figured I would go ahead and report in before I headed over to sickbay."
"Well, consider yourself reported in," Tim said, smiling. "You ever had a chance to serve in an Intrepid-class sickbay?"
"Unless they are the same size as an Akira class then no sir I have not served in an Intrepid-class sickbay." said Devoni.
"They're round about the same," Tim answered, recalling the details of the Akira class. "Designed around the same time, but the Highlander's isn't quite as large." The Akira was designed, in essence, as a battleship, and so her medical facilities had borne extensive casualties in mind. Engineers always did what they could to upgrade a ship's medical facilities to the latest standards, but only so much of the equipment was exchangeable, and so the Highlander was still outfitted with a lot of the medical technology that was top-of-the-line in the 2370s.
"We've probably got a few more luxuries than the Akira, too," Tim continued. "We're designed more for exploration and scientific study, so it's less of a 'cram battle systems into every available space' and more 'let's give these guys the space to live'. Has Commander Ra-Xialii assigned you quarters yet?"
"Actually he was next on my list to visit." said Devoni. He had the rest of his belongings stored in the transporter buffers until he procured quarters.
Tim nodded. "Right, well I'll let you check in with him then," he said with a slight smile. He turned a little back towards the console, putting in a few more commands to bring up a new schematic of the warp power flow configuration, and frowned slightly before half turning to direct his attention back towards Devoni again. "We'll be leaving the surface as soon as I'm done putting all of our systems back to how they were, so long as Starfleet sees fit to give me the rest of the senior staff quickly. If you need to bring anything or anyone else aboard, you'd best do it quick."
Devoni nodded. "Thank you captain. And Once we get underway I'll be calling on you as I will be starting crew physicals."
"'course you will..." Tim muttered under his breath. He had nothing against the doctor, but he hated having to do regular physicals. He'd much rather spend the time tinkering with something.
