Arrangements for the Deceased

Posted on Fri Apr 22nd, 2016 @ 7:29pm by Captain Tim Williams & Doctor Rikka Takanashi M.D.

Episode: Lost Property
Location: USS Highlander - Sickbay

It had been several hours since Rikka's team's had beamed over and retrieved the crew from the DeSalle. They had managed to retrieve just under 98% of the biomatter aboard the ship, which was impressive considering that some of it was inside the ships conduits and circuitry.

She had changed out of her EVA suit and was standing in the medical lab. The table in the centre of the room was stacked neatly with all the collection jars, each the size of a Jam Jar. The remains were all labelled with a sticker on the jar stating their rank, name and position. Rikka had separated the officers from the enlisted and placed them on a second table.

Also sat on the other side of the lab was a large pile of uniforms, also labelled and neatly folded. She thought it would be respectful to save the uniforms the crew had last worn and keep them tidy and labelled, plus they had to extract the biomatter from the actual uniforms themselves.

"Takanashi to Williams" she said opening a Comm Channel to the Captain.

"Williams here."

"I've got all the crew and their uniforms onboard and...." she paused for a few moments to think of the correct way to say it. "...Arranged... No... Organised neatly in the Medical Lab. What should I do with them?" she asked simply.

Tim paused for a moment before he answered. "I'm on my way down," he finally said, wanting to see what was left of the DeSalle himself before making any decisions as to their memorial.

It took only a few minutes for the captain to make his way down from the bridge to the medical lab. He stopped once he was inside, and took a moment to look at the jars of remains. It really was one of the worst ways he could think of for a crew to go. "I don't know why I was expecting there to be something more... human... about them when they were removed," he said quietly as he took a few steps closer to the table in the centre. "It's such an undignified way to die, flattened against a bulkhead and turned into nothing more than goo."

Rikka sighed at his response. "There wouldn't have been anything left at all if lifesupport had remained functioning" She explained simply. "I have no idea what I should do with them" she passed him a PaDD. "I have however matched all their DNA to the ones in the database, not one person on the ships manifest is missing. So the ship was lost with all hands, all of which are now sat on that table..."

"Well, at least there's that," Tim said. Knowing that all of the crew had been lost at least meant that there had been nobody left along on a ship occupied by the pulverised remains of their co-workers. He let a breath out through his lips and lifted a hand up to rub his chin as he tried to think. "We'll need to have a memorial service for them. I'll talk with Counsellor Taylor about the arrangements. There were probably a mix of religious groups onboard that would need to be taken into account." It still felt so wrong to him to be talking about the details so matter-of-factly. "See if you can locate any of their decendants that may still be living. I'm sure they would like some closure on what happened to their ancestors."

"I'll do that" Rikka replied. "All their files can now be updated too, from MIA to deceased at least" she explained.

"Let me know if there's anything else you need," Tim said, as he made his way out to go and find the counsellor to talk about the memorial service.
