Checking In

Episode: Lost Property
Location: Sickbay

Ryan strode into the brightly lit sickbay aboard the USS Highlander and glanced around. He hated reported in for his medical screening...hated it with a passion. It wasn't that he hated doctors, he actually got along very well with the MACO medic that he worked with. But doctors always lectured him about what he put his body through; most of it was job related. Some of it not so much.

"Doc?" Ryan asked, still looking around the medical bay.

Rikka's head popped out from around the corner of her office door.
"Oh hello" she said. "Can I help?" she asked simply.

"I'm here for my physical," Ryan explained. "I've found its a good idea to get it over with instead of one of you medical types hunting me down."

"Ah" Rikka said. "Take a seat I'll be right out" she explained.

Ryan hoped up on one of the empty biobeds and waited for the doctor to return. Although he had seen his fair share of sickbays and was no stranger to injuries, they still gave him the creeps. It was an entirely irrational fear, after all why be afraid of sickbays when you spend your free time beating up Klingons in the holodeck?

A few seconds later she emerged from the office a light blue medical gown over her uniform and an old fashioned stethoscope around her neck.

Ryan tilted his head at the device. "I thought our corpsmen in the MACO's was the only one that used one of those anymore."

"You'd be surprised how handy they are" Rikka said. "You see that tricorder over there?" she asked nodding at a Medical Tricorder on the side. "Explain to me how good it will be if we're stranded on a planet and its battery is dead? How will I know you are not in pain, how will I check your heart?" she asked.

"Valid points," Ryan shrugged.

"Hold out your arm please" Rikka said as she held out a hand for him.

Ryan did as he was told.

Rikka held his wrist firmly pushing down on his artery. She tapped several times on the biobed as she counted his pulse. After a minute she let go and made a note on a PADD.

"Well your pulse is normal, I'd say you're a little nervous in this environment" she explained.

She then put the Stethoscope into her ears and placed it lightly on his chest over his right lung. "Can you please breath in and out again, nice and slowly? I want to listen to your lungs" she asked.

Again, Ryan complied with the doctors orders.

Rikka listened to his chest as he breathed in and out slowly. "Your lung's seem in good order. There sounds like there is no infection or breathing problems" she explained. Next she pulled out a small torch from her pocket and held it parralel to his eyes.

"If you could follow the light with your eyes please" she asked as she moved it slowly from left to right.

Again, Ryan complied with the doctor's orders. Personally, he had no idea why she wasn't using the tricorder for things like this. He understood that reliance on technology could fail you on occasion but it was also a great boon to certain areas, science and medical being one of them. Still, he supposed he shouldn't doubt the doctor's methods.

"Well there's no pupil dialation and no signs of any recent head trauma" Rikka said. "So basically you're in good health Lieutenant" she said with a smile. She tapped again on the PADD and then passed it to Ryan.

"Pass this onto the XO, you're clear for duty medical wise" Rikka explained. "Is there anything else you want to discuss while you're here?" she asked.

"Not that I can think of sir," Ryan nodded.

"Good" Rikka said. "You're cleared then. All done here" she explained.

"See you around doc," Ryan stated, sliding off the biobed. "Although to be honest, I really hope that I never need your services."

"Everyone says that" Rikka said. "Although coming to sickbay is sometimes a good thing, should you ever get a girl pregnant. You'll have to be happy for that" She explained simply.

"I won't have to worry about that doc," Ryan smiled. "Girls aren't really my thing. I'll see you around doctor."
