Orphans
Location: Security Centre [Deck 6, USS Highlander]
Timeline: After "New Arrivals" [Backpost]
ON:
Karil bid farewell to Seylan, dropping him off at the shipboard classroom while he unpacked his meager belongings. A painting, desk, writing utensils, computer terminal, couch and chair. He dumped a suitcase full of clothes on the floor and kicked it toward the wall, and spread out a blanket over the bed that came packaged with the room. As he had a child, he'd been allowed his own quarters, but they only came with one bed. He would have to replicate pallet dimensions for Seylan. In the interim, he eyed the couch warily. His back was going to suffer for it.
He stacked his painting on the desk, spread out some of his tools and equipment, and then eyed the PADD flashing by his pocket. He was due for a meeting with Lieutenant McIntyre roughly five minutes ago. Abandoning his new home decor project, he exited his quarters and made his way to McIntyre's office.
Ringing the chime, Karil entered as soon as he was called inside, still wearing the clothes he'd flew in. A nondescript shirt and slacks, and his FPS flak jacket. "Lieutenant," he greeted his new superior officer, standing straight with his hands behind his back. "I'm SSA Karil, I've been assigned to your department by the Federation Protective Service." When he spoke, it was mellifluous and calm, without characteristic sharpness of most Vulcans. "Good to meet you," he bowed his head curtly.
McIntyre had been dreading this moment. The civilian operator coming in to tread on his toes. The Federation Protective Service of all things too. He hoped the Vulcan couldn't read his face and tried not to be taken aback by the parlance.
"And you, Karil." He made a motion toward the empty chair which sat on the other side of the desk before pressing a control on his desk which caused the interior door, which led out into the Highlander's Security Centre, to slide shut.
Karil sat, linking his fingers together with his elbows resting on his knees. "I understand that you're likely wary of my presence. I'm here as an adviser, nothing more and nothing less. This is your ship and your department, I do not have any interest in undermining that." He held up his hands, and then placed them back on his knees.
McIntyre shuddered slightly. Could the Vulcan read his mind? Hell, it was probably written all over his face. "I appreciate that. I'm not going to lie, I am a bit wary but I'm also interested to learn a few FPS techniques."
Karil nodded. "I'll be glad to assist however I can. These are my transfer orders," he held out a small isolinear chip. "My expertise is primarily in the areas of violent crime and crisis mitigation, but I am at your disposal however you see fit. I will be running point on some remote investigative work- internal to the CIRG- while I'm out here, but it should not interfere with your department."
"If you need any resources from us, they're at your disposal." McIntyre replied, keeping the interdepartmental cooperation going. "My staff have prepared you a desk out in the bull pen as well. You may want to make an appointment to speak to the captain. He might have some use for your mitigation talents."
"I'll give him a ring," Karil said with a small smile, which was almost totally out of place on his Vulcan features.
"Excellent. Thank you for your time, Karil."
McIntyre thought on the smile for a moment and just about managed to shift the shudder he felt coming over him. Vulcans just looked plain weird with smiles on their faces.
