Updating the Medical File

Gregory entered the Highlander's modest sickbay with some sense of hesitation. It wasn't as if Gregory had intentionally been avoiding sickbay. He just...hadn't gotten around to it yet. One of the more frequently talked about stereotypes going around Starfleet Academy was how upset medical staff could get if one didn't keep up with their regular visits. People said they often had such a hard time dealing with command-level personnel, many didn't have the patience to deal with newer personnel like himself. So although his first meeting with Captain Williams earlier that afternoon had gone rather well, there was no telling whether he would have the same experience this time around.

Devoni sat at his desk looking over the inventory list for all the medications, med-kits, those sorts of things. He wanted to be sure that everything was on board before the ship departed Cestus III.

Back in the Sickbay ward Chief Petty Officer Aris sh'Rohi was doing a diagnostic on one of the bio-beds when she heard the doors open. Turning around she saw a young ensign entering.

"Can I help you with something?" not quite sure who the Ensign was or why he was in sickbay.

"I...uh...Ensign Gregory Mason, Chief Science Officer," Gregory replied. The sudden arrival of a woman in services teal had startled Gregory somewhat, even though his whole reason for coming down here in the first place was to see someone about his medical records. "I'm here for my physical," the young science officer added hastily. It sounded like a rather silly response when you thought about it. Why else would an otherwise normal, healthy individual be standing in sickbay when everyone else was settling in or getting ready for their eventual departure?

Aris smiled at the young officer. "If you'll have a seat on the Bio-bed I'll go get the doctor."

The young science officer did as instructed. He crossed the short distance between where he had been standing to the nearest biobed in only a few short steps. Placing a hand on the edge of the bed itself, Gregory turned around and lifted himself up onto the bed. Then he placed both of his hands in his lap and waited.

Aris turned away and walked over to the doctor's Officer. She rapped her knuckles on the side to get the doctor's attention.

Devoni Jala was looking over the supply list on his terminal when the sound of knocking caught his attention. "Yes?"

"You have a patient out here waiting for you. They are here for their physical."

Devoni looked up. "I'll be right there."

Finishing up what he was working on Devoni grabbed a tricorder that he always kept on his desk and walked out into the main ward.

Gregory had been doing his best to ignore the brief exchange between the Chief Petty Officer and the Chief Medical Officer through the open office doorway. One of the more interesting parts of being an introvert was that Gregory often overheard other people's conversations. Whether it was because they honestly didn't know he was there or because they just didn't care, people never really seemed all that concerned Gregory might overhear them. That didn't mean, however, that Gregory never felt uncomfortable listening in on other people's conversations. Although there was little evidence to suggest these two were discussing anything but his own arrival, Gregory chose instead to focus on the wall mounted display directly opposite where he was sitting instead.

Devoni walked over to the young man sitting on the bed. "Doctor Devoni Jala, at your service." Devoni said as he held out a hand.

"Ensign Gregory Mason," Gregory replied, turning his attention toward the man approaching him. He hesitated only a moment before accepting the doctor's extended hand and giving it a shake. "I'm sorry I haven't come down sooner," Gregory continued, "but I've only been aboard three days, things have been busy..."

"Don't feel bad. I've just arrived recently myself. So I know what you mean." said Devoni. "Remove your jacket and lay back and we will start."

Although it seemed somewhat unusual for what should have been a relatively simple check-up, Gregory saw no reason not to do as instructed. The young science officer reached up with one hand and unzipped the jacket of his uniform. He did his best not to flap around too much as he removed his arms from the sleeves before setting the jacket aside and laying back on the biobed.

"Aris. Can you bring me the tool tray from my office. I seem to have forgotten an instrument."

"You got it." Aris said and then headed off to the doctors office.

A few minutes late Aris arrived with the requested took kit. "Here you go."

"Thank you." Devoni opened the kit and removed a strange old looking device with a medal handle and a rubber head and laid it beside the bed. He took out a black looking tube with earplugs at one end and a round piece at the other end and placed it around his neck. The last item he removed from his kit was something that you would only see in a holo-lab. A holographic imager.

Gregory raised an eyebrow when he saw the tools Doctor Jala had requested. While they may have seemed out-of-place in what many considered to be a state-of-the-art Starfleet sickbay, none of the instruments on the tool tray were all that unfamiliar to him. They reminded him very much of the house calls the Mason family doctor often made throughout much of his childhood. In fact, despite how far medical science had come on North Star Colony since the twenty-second century, one would still have been more likely to encounter the first two items than the third during a typical doctor's visit.

"First off we are going to take a holo-image of that way I can use it to reference your other medical exams in case of in emergency. Then we will proceed with the physical. If you will lay back on the biobed I'll start the imaging process." said Devoni.

Satisfied with the doctor's explanation, Gregory lay back down on the biobed where he tried to relax as much as possible. His most recent physicals at the Academy had turned out just fine and he knew there really wasn't anything to be worried about. The whole point of this examination was simply to establish a baseline for the medical staff aboard the Highlander. A few minutes of holographic imaging, some follow up questions, and he would be walking out of there in no time. Still, Gregory found himself reaching for that place in his mind he so often went to whenever he needed to be present without really interacting all that much. It was something he'd learned to do relatively early on that really diminished his chances of interfering with whatever was going on around him. Most people saw it as a positive thing, a way to stay focused on whatever experiment or task was at hand, but the truth was...it was really more of an escape.

Devoni took the holo imaging device and began to scan it over the Ensign. After completing the scan he took his stethoscope the place the ear pieces into his ears and leaned down and placed the diaphragm to the ensigns chest. Listening he could hear the man's heart beating and his lungs filling with air.

He looked at the monitor one last time before picking up a padd and inputting some data. "Any allergies or medical problems I should be aware of?"

Gregory shook his head from side to side. "Not that I know of," he replied. Whether because of his unique physiology or simply a case of extremely good fortune, Gregory never had any history of prolonged illness or major physical injury growing up. It was as if he had inherited the best traits from both his parents...at least when it came to physical health.

Devoni finished up the physical of the young ensign. "All finished here. I'll input all the new data into your medical file."

"Thank you, doctor," Gregory said, "will you be needing anything else?"

"Nope. You are free to go."
